Swine Flu Update

Under Stress Management

If you’ve been reading the news in the past few days, you’ve probably seen the latest report on Swine Flu–that it’s expected to return this Fall in a more problematic form. Yes, although the early version of Swine Flu seemed to be ridiculously mild compared to the scary scenarios being thrown around at that time, this season’s Swine Flu may be more to contend with.

Officials can’t predict very much with extreme accuracy, but from what they’ve been seeing of this virus so far, they expect it to behave somewhat differently than the flu we’re used to: instead of causing severe illness in primarily those over 65, the severe cases and deaths have been seen much more in children and young adults. And while seasonal flu tends to kill around 35,000 and hospitalize around 200,000 in the USA each year, this strain may actually kill between 30,000 and 90,000, with hospitalization numbers potentially past one million! (These are not hard-and-fast projections, but possibilities–planning scenarios.)

This is indeed troubling. Now the reassuring news (because, goodness knows, we need it!) First, governments appear to be much more prepared for a pandemic than in previous years, with a vaccine on the way and some protocols in place. Additionally, we have more things like hand sanitizer and even masks that can help us to stay healthy if Swine Flu spreads far and wide (as it’s assumed it will–as much as half the US population could become infected). And, as with the flu we’re used to, getting plenty of rest (that means staying home from school and work if you’re sick), and keeping stress levels low (as stress can impact immunity) are always wise courses of action.

In terms of preparation (as well as stress management), it never hurts to be armed with information (and supplies). Here are some resources that can help:

Interesting post to read. I’m still on the fence about the flu vaccine or suffering through the flu itself, which is worse long term?
